THE RENAISSANCE

- The Renaissance is a period in European history, covering the span between the 14th

and 17th centuries.


DEFINITION

- Defined as “rebirth”, “early modern period” and this is the period that turn towards

the classics and discovery of new worlds.


HUMANISM

- A renaissance cultural movement which turned away from medieval scholasticism

and revived interest in ancient Greek and Roman thought.

- Humanistic stated that man should be the object of study, not God.


REFORMATION

- Specifically referred to as the Protestant Reformation, was a schism in Western

 Christianity initiated by Martin Lurther and continued by John Calvin.


WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

- Born in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare did not go to university and married

 Anne Hathaway. They had a daughter and twins, one twin died.

- He is a good and responsible businessman.


SHAKESPEARE AND THE RENAISSANCE

- The plays are :

 Psychological complexity in characters, usage of Greek and Roman classics and

secular.


SONNETS

- Is a fourteen lines poem in iambic pentameter.

- 4 types of sonnets which are

 Petrarchan, Shakespearean, Miltonic and Spenserian.


PETRARCHAN

- Introduced by Italian poet.

- Rhyme scheme: abba, abba, cdecde or cdcdcd.


SHAKESPEAREAN

- By Shakespearean

- Rhyme scheme: abab, cdcd, efef, gg.

- Sonnet 1-126 are for a young man.

- Sonnet 127-154 are for a “Dark Lady or Mistress”.

Relationship tips by Sir Gawain and The Green Knight Sir Gawain and The Green Knight is a late 14-th Century Middle English chivalric romance. It’s one of the most well-known stories during the reign of King Arthur. It is an important example of a chivalric romance which usually involves a hero going on a quest that will test his power and self. Its author is unknown, just like Beowulf. It’s a story of how Sir Gawain accepts a challenge by a Green Knight who suddenly appears at King Arthur’s Palace one day. The Green Knight challenge any knight of Arthur’s Round Table to strike him with an axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and beheaded the Knight. The Green Knight then stands up and picks up his head and remind Gawain about the deal. A year after Gawain travels to meet the Green Knight at a place called Green Chapel. He stopped by a castle owned by Bertilak de Hautdesert. He was welcomed by the host and his wife Lady Bertilak....

What is English Romantic Literature? Romantic is characterised by the expression of love. Romantic also means a word which describes the feeling you have for someone you love. It could be anything in this world no boundaries for love i would say. But what is a romantic period ? Is it a time you were being only romantic?
