THE
RENAISSANCE
- The Renaissance is a period in European history,
covering the span between the 14th
and 17th centuries.
DEFINITION
- Defined as “rebirth”, “early modern period” and this
is the period that turn towards
the classics and discovery of new worlds.
HUMANISM
- A renaissance cultural movement which turned away
from medieval scholasticism
and revived interest in ancient Greek and Roman
thought.
- Humanistic stated that man should be the object of
study, not God.
REFORMATION
- Specifically referred to as the Protestant
Reformation, was a schism in Western
Christianity
initiated by Martin Lurther and continued by John Calvin.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
- Born in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare did not go
to university and married
Anne Hathaway.
They had a daughter and twins, one twin died.
- He is a good and responsible businessman.

secular.
SONNETS
- Is a fourteen lines poem in iambic pentameter.
- 4 types of sonnets which are
Petrarchan,
Shakespearean, Miltonic and Spenserian.
PETRARCHAN
- Introduced by Italian poet.
- Rhyme scheme: abba, abba, cdecde or cdcdcd.
SHAKESPEAREAN
- By Shakespearean
- Rhyme scheme: abab, cdcd, efef, gg.
- Sonnet 1-126 are for a young man.
- Sonnet 127-154 are for a “Dark Lady or Mistress”.
