SHAKESPEARE’S
GLOBE.
Shakespeare’s Globe, London, United
Kingdom.
Shakespeare’s
globe have been in my bucket list as long as I have been doing it. I have
always wanted to go here ever since I was a little girl. I was exposed to the
world of theatre by my father who enjoyed going to the local performing art
centre. I remembered one evening during teatime we had a talk about things that
I love and he brought up about this place. My father tell me about how this
place was a reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre from the Elizabethan
Era, which was associated with the infamous William Shakespeare.
So
let me tell you a little bit of information regarding this place. The original
theatre was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's
Men which was later renamed to The King’s Men in 1603 when King James became
the patron. Unfortunately in 1613 it was destroyed by fire but fret not it was
immediately rebuilt and it was finished on June 1614. But in 1642, after nearly
three decade of operation this place come to its end when the Puritans (English
reformed protestant), who found theatre vulgar and intolerable, shut all
theatres down. Anyhow after two years, the Globe was levelled to make way for
tenement residences. What a bummer shutting down art centre just for this, but
then people need places to stay.
There
you go, that’s a bit of information regarding the original background of the
Globe Theatre. So now let’s talk about
the Shakespeare’s Globe. Mind you this place is the reconstruction of the
original Globe Theatre and there’s no information on how the original one
looked like.
So
Shakespeare’s Globe was founded by the actor and director Sam Wanamaker. He built
about 230 metres from what was assumed as the original theatre side and it was
opened to the public in 1997, with the first play production being Henry V by
our beloved William Shakespeare. Apart from that, the place also includes the
Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, an indoor theatre which opened in January 2014. The
playhouse is a smaller, candle-lit space based on the indoor playhouses of
Jacobean London. Not to mention The Sackler Studios, an educational and
rehearsal studio complex which situated just around the corner from the main
site. There is also an exhibition about Shakespeare's life and work, and
regular tours of the two theatres. As you can see there’s a lot of department
within this site and no wonder it is a very popular tourist site in London.
In
1970, American actor and director Sam Wanamaker founded the Shakespeare Globe
Trust and the International Shakespeare Globe Centre, with the objective of
building a faithful recreation of Shakespeare's Globe close to its original
location at Bankside, Southwark. This inspired the founding of a number of
Shakespeare's Globe Centres around the world, an activity in which Wanamaker
also participated. People tell him that it was impossible to achieve due to the
complications and differences in the 16th century design which
clashes with our modern fire and safety requirements. But Wanamaker persevered
to his vision for over two decade that he can and he will built that theatre
globe and in 1997 it finally come true! See people keep believing in your dream
and it will come true!
